The 50 year old harness was no longer up to the task of handling 12 volts. The insulation was just too brittle. I do not seem to have this problem with my Corsa, so maybe this is a West coast (dry & hot) issue? I could not justify a perfect reproduction harness so I opted for a painless wiring kit.
